VALUE FOR STUDENTS
IMMEDIATE SAVINGS Example: $80 textbook New Book Price ............................................ $79.99 Used Book Price ........................................... $60.49 Rental Price ................................................ $35.99
FIXED PRICE Price is not affected by inflation during the four semester rental commitment. (books for sale generally go up 3-5% per year)
BOOKSTORE COMMITMENT
PILOT PROGRAM Instituted in Fall 2006. Program expanding to 17 titles in Fall 2009.
STUDENT CHOICE Students always have the choice to purchase or rent the book. If a student rents a book and then decides to keep it, she or he would simply be charged the difference between the rental and purchase price.
GUARANTEED BOOK QUALITY Damaged books are taken out of circulation.
INVESTMENT Bookstore will invest in beginning inventory.
FACULTY & DEPARTMENT COMMITMENT
FOUR SEMESTER ADOPTION PERIOD Rental Textbooks to be used in consecutive (Fall and Spring) semesters.
SIGNED AGREEMENT Instructor, Department Chair, and Bookstore shall agree on the terms.
ANNOUNCEMENTS Faculty agree to announce Rental Return deadline in class and/or on blackboard. Return deadline is always the last day of scheduled exams.
TEXTBOOK QUALIFICATIONS
EDITION CHANGES It is preferred that textbooks not change edition during the term of the rental period (four semesters), so that it is not prohibitive to replace damaged copies.
MULTI-PART CLASS TEXTBOOKS Textbooks used in two-or three-part classes do not qualify (i.e., General Chemistry or Intro to Spanish).
PRIMARY REQUIRED TEXT It is preferred that the textbooks in the rental program are the primary required text.
CONSISTENT CLASS ENROLLMENT Preferred class size each semester (one or more sections) is 50 students or more. It is preferred that the class size for each term be relatively stable. (i.e., a class that has an enrollment of 200 in Fall but just 25 or 50 in Spring would not be optimal).
IMPERIAL VALLEY CAMPUS LIMITATION Due to smaller class sizes, textbooks used primarily at the Imperial Valley Campus will not qualify at this time but may in the future.
LOW PRICE PAPERBACKS Paperbacks at low price points are not good candidates. ($14.95, for example)

LEGISLATION & PUBLIC INTEREST
The CSU Textbook Affordability Task force in 2007, recommended price saving measures including used books and textbook rental. The State of California passed AB2477 and it became law on January 1, 2005. AB2477 encourages Universities, Colleges and their respective bookstores to consider textbook rental. CALPIRG in reports of 2004 and 2005, also encourages implementation of text rental programs. |
